DEAR Lessons begin at Kirk Balk Academy (Drop Everything And Read)

In the last few weeks, all Year 7 and 8 students took part in their first Drop Everything And Read lesson, as part of the new and innovative Reading Routes project.

All students in Year 7 are currently following the Comedy Central route, and had the choice of which of 5 books to order to read first this half term. Last week’s DEAR lesson featured The Falcon’s Malteser, a spectacular book about a Private Detective, Herbert, and his younger brother Nick. A dwarf comes to their office one day and asks them to look after a box of Maltesers, ‘on their life’ and never to open it…

Our Year 8 students are following the Adventure route this half term, and again had a choice of five exciting books to choose from. Their DEAR lesson centred on The House with the Chicken Legs, a fantastic novel about Marinka, who dreams of a normal life with opportunities to make friends, instead of the one she shares with her Grandmother in a house with chicken legs that moves through the world at night…

This week’s DEAR lessons are on the featured books: The Boy at the Back of the Class (Y7) and Around the World in 80 Days (Y8).

We were very impressed by the work of our students in their first DEAR lesson, and we are now looking forward to exploring new adventures across other texts on the route.
